State Farm sponsoring Road Rangers for the next three years
Michael Turnbell | South Florida Sun-Sentinel
FORT LAUDERDALE - Like a good neighbor, the Road Rangers are there.
Starting today, they will be more of them roaming the interstates in Broward and Palm Beach counties thanks to State Farm.
The insurance company announced this morning it is sponsoring the courtesy patrol for three years.
The sponsorship will allow three more trucks to be added to the fleet of 15 that cover I-95, I-75 and I-595.
The hours for the patrol remain the same in both counties - 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. weekdays.
Miami-based Sunshine Towing , which operates the Road Rangers for the state in South Florida, made a plea in June for sponsors to save the program after the Legislature cut funding in half.
The cuts forced the Road Rangers to eliminate weekend and late night hours and reduce the number of trucks on the road. The popular program provides free roadside assistance to motorists and helps authorities clear wrecks.
State Farm stepped forward, agreeing to provide $1.5 million over three years. The money will be used to buy three more trucks, wrap the entire fleet with State Farm's red and white logo and hire additional drivers.
A few trucks already bear the near red-and-white color scheme. The rest will get the new look by the end of January.
State Farm already sponsors the courtesy patrol trucks on Florida's Turnpike.
